If you have just content site then don't give chance to users for log in and remove comments from page. Use cache as much as you can. Read the reviews first and go for the extensions. Trail it on your home computer. It really helps you in a great way. Even some templates create conflicts check out them. Finally hosting is the biggest part. Search for the best support hosting.

I know a tool Nessus which is a good tool to use for general server security and protect you from the hackers.

I do not think most hackers occur because the server is insecure due to various defects and gaps in the sites / scripts .. Or if a system administrator was very careful when implementing the server, then there is no possibility massive server being hacked. If you are on a shared host, then it is not their problem, that is the problem of accommodation providers to find and patch security vulnerabilities.
