Type "list" to see a list of messages. Each message is assigned a number. To read a message, type "retr#", where "#" is the number of the message you wish to read, and "retr" is "retrieve". To delete a message, simply type "dele#" again with the message number instead of a #. When you're done, simply type "quit".

To read mail, you can use mailx, which is the command:
    mail

to read a specific mail message, you can enter the message number, followed by 'd' to delete the message.

That being said, if you do this repeatedly, do yourself a favor and install Pine. It's a curses-based mail client that's pretty good for text-based. Pretty intuitive, as well!
