why do you need an Assets & Batches and a Portfolio Item?

Hello friends


When you add a computer to the Computer tab why do you need an Assets & Batches and a Portfolio Item? It just seems like you are creating 3 records where 1 record would do the trick. Am I missing something? If I break the link and just enter computers without A&B and Portfolio Items records what kind of functionality will I be giving up?
