Colossus90 I used to use free webhosts for two years before I started a business and you will find that if you get a good one the reliability may be good for a period of time but as they aren't making much money or none at all that the service can drop out without notice due to server dying, going bankrupt, etc.
I would much more strongly recommend you go with a paid web host as this will provide your site with reliability and support.
Anyhow I have answered this question so many times and have worked a good answer out for this:
I was with a free hosting company for two-half years as I was about 16 at the time and had no money to support a paid website.
This was what I thought to be great at the time and such a good idea! At the time it was however I had many issues trying to move everything over from the free web host to a paid web host mainly due to two reasons:
1. Their main server went down and there was no backups. This caused me to a lose a fair amount of data but luckily I had been creating backups from time to time so I had most of it.
2. I was getting ready to set up my own business at the time and wanted to ensure that my website would be up when clients want to access it.
I can understand why people go for free hosts but I just want to warn everyone that free hosts may not be all that they seem and that they are not going to provide the best and most reliable hosting solutions.
It is definitely a good start however going with one that at least allows you to host your site with your own domain is something I would strongly recommend as it is something I wished I had done when I started. Most domains can be had for a low cost per year.
The other issue is that when you do decide to make the jump from free hosting to paid hosting it can be quite hard as some hosts will make it soo difficult for you to get away from them ie paying them money to allow you to take your data with you that you should ensure you read all contracts before signing up for a free hosting solution.
I now run a webhosting and web design business and I am glad the security and future growth that a paid hosting solution offers me.
If anyone needs help or guidance with issues with hosting solutions or trying to decide who to choose I would recommend either using webhostingtalk.com or a similar website.
Always make sure that you contact any future web hosts before signing up to ask any pertinet questions. ie. can you install x for me? can you manage x for me? Can you do this and that? Try and be specific with your questions and if they don't seem good enough for you go elsewhere.
