Directory is a website which does focus on listing websited by various categories. As serach engine lists web pages, directory lists websites.

A Web directory organizes Web sites by subject, and is usually maintained by humans instead of software. The searcher looks at sites organized in a series of categories and menus. Web directories are usually much smaller than search engines' databases, since the sites are looked at by human eyes instead of by spiders.

Web Directory can be said as online catalog of various websites, it list the sites by category. We submit sites in to directories mainly for one way links.

Getting links from web directories help in building links as well as your website start receiving traffic from the web directories.

Directories have proven an important source for links. These links should ideally be optimized for the keywords that we want our site ranked for in the search engines. Usually directories allow the submission of just one page (generally home page), so the keywords have to be relevant to that page.
