I was also in a search of the best directory script out there some time ago. I was particularly looking for a free script because I didn't want to invest much money at first. I was sure that I had to invest money in promoting the directory as well as in other areas too.

From the start I was advised to get phpLD like you were here. Still I searched for free alternatives. From my experience now I can tell you go with phpLD or similar payed solution. These are the best. Because if you choose those it doesn't really matter which one as all have lots of themes available for free and the admin interface is prety straight forward.
