    Applets are small programs that can be embedded within web pages to perform some specific functionality, such as computations, animations, and information processing. Applets are written using the Java language.

    An applet is a little application. Prior to the World Wide Web, the built-in writing and drawing programs that came with Windows were sometimes called "applets."

    The term applet will be widely used in JVM, java programming application. It's a small part of a big application, applet will be useful like a plugin or a widget means an addon extension. Without this plugin program will run but it will perform it's own specific task that is assigned to it.
