Actually I'd suggest it's even more complicated than you've mentioned.
1) The biggest mistake people make about logos, is that they forget it needs to be attractive to their target market. Not the business owner.
2) A professional logo will represent your business, goals and ethos.
3) A logo should be unique and differentiate you from your competitors.
4) It should be engaging and memorable.
5) Logos need to be legible when large (on a building) or small (on your business card or website icon).
6) Like all branding, logos need to be utilised consistently to maximise brand recognition.
