Yes it is right that design of the page is the most basic thing to attract visitors but another best things are the relevancy and fruit of the contents to bring them back many times.

Design must be amazing and very easy to memorize.

I too would love to only make unique and beautiful sites. In real life this is not only the case though. You have to look into what you client is after, it could be clean, corporate and so on. So many variables. Sometimes you create something killer only to find the client saying he want something more simple...

You need to make your website more easy to navigate visitors, don't make your site so much complicated. Put navigation button in necessary portion of your site. One other thing is content, put original and refreshing content in your site that beneficial for your visitors. If your site has relevant and entertaining content then visitor like to visit your site again and again.
