If it is running OK for your use, let XP stay.
If you find that the computer hangs frequently, go for Win 98.

I got an old laptop with Pentium III 500 Hz and 192 MB SDRAM. It came with XP running on it, but the seller recommended me to downgrade to Windows 98. I wonder which OS is best for this computer, 98, 2000 or XP? I only need to do word processing and web surfing, plus play a few flash games online. I want a simple and fast OS, which seems to be opposite to where Windows is going. But I don't want to switch to non-Windows OS either, not yet.

xp will run fine on it, it is after all an old machine dont expect to much out of it...
turn off themes to help it.. disable unneeded service
Xp needs 256MB ram to run well, I suggest a windows 2000 build.
i too prefer windows 2000
Probably Windows 98 or 2000 would be the best.

If your laptop is slow with XP then change it to lower OS i recommend Windows 2000 for maybe you cannot install updated higher software Win98.
I would suggest you with no second thought Windows 98. I am still using it on one of my old computer and it is working perfectly, the best part is, it is faster than my xp computer which is latest in technology....
Hi,
I will suggest window-98 for any type of old computers.
