There is a reason why XP is better, stick with it. And it's hard to install 98 and you will need a driver for everything on it.
i think the west operating for old computers is 2000 and win 98...............
window xp is a best for all time.It is a user friendlily operating system.
XP is great if you're a windows fan, is fast and stable. The very best in terms of resources is probably a light weight linux distro, such as xubuntu(uses xfce) or lubuntu. Archlinux is nice if you're more technical.

Well you can use windows XP as per as mt thinking because I had used XP with the same configuration that u have given.
Now i am using window 7. But in my opinion window xp is the bes.
I would propose you with no second considered Windows 98. I am still using it on one of my old computer and it is employed flawlessly, the best part is, it is much quicker than my xp computer which is latest in technology.
It is window XP that is very comfortable with any Hardware machine
