Default My computer works but after the welcome and I log on there is no desktop, start menu

or taskbar, only background We had MalawareAlarm (a rouge virus) on it but then we got Norten 360 so it should have gone away is it another virus or the same one, is the computer stupid or is it us?
The only way to get onto anything is to press alt+control+delete then under application click new task, then do everything menually.
It is a Window XPonlu about 6 months old,
We're arew thinking of networking it with our good windows vista would the virus spread to that (if it is a virus).

So in advance any help would be greatly appriciated and thanks verey much.

Ps.I'm writing this on behalf of my Family. : )

you have nothing to restore in your infected pc..as you have told, that you are infected by a rouge virus-you cannot open it the usual way, so how you could get your pc back to normal work? so, not even to networking you can do.

it is safer that you wipe out the entire disk for a safer use. no need to safekeep the previous files you have had in your pc for it will only be infecting to other pc once you do the networking.

but if you insist, you can do a precise work i will tell you, please follow:

if you have another pc, install in it an AVG (download it from filehippo) latest version and update it..after so doing, turn it off. detach the harddisk of the infected pc. plug it in the pc where the AVG installed, make it slave, then boot it.

when the desktop appears, make a scan (specifically) of the newly attached hd...it will show you all the viruses that was hiding in it. then heal.

after healing, go to the virus vault, and shred the viruses kept in it...then defrag the newly installed hd..

try also to scan and recover bad sector...then return the hd to its original pc..restart.

see any changes...if none, contact me for next step.
