A canonical issue arises when 301 redirects are not properly in place. This means that your website can be accessed by search engines from several different URLs. This means that search engines can then potentially index your site under different URLs, meaning that it will look like a site of duplicated content.

When a same page opens with different url then it's known as canonical error. It mainly happens in e-commerce website. To remove it use 301 redirection or canonical tag in .htaccess file.

Canonical is a preferred url for most search engines as they lift up your links & ranking signals for the content available through multiple URL’s. Rel canonical url’s also resolve duplicate content issues. Rel=canonical usually used to sum up it within the top portion of your HTML.

Canonical error occurs when there are different urls representing the same URL in search engine. With specifying canonical tag you can specify the authoritative URL for the website.

A **canonical tag** is a way of telling search engines that a specific URL represents the master copy of a page. Canonical tag will helps in preventing problems caused by identical or "duplicate" content that appears in multiple URLs.

Canonical issues most commonly occur when a website has more than one URL that displays similar or identical content. They’re often the result of not having proper redirects in place, though they can also be caused by search parameters on ecommerce sites and by syndicating or publishing content on multiple sites.

    Hello,

When your home page opens with both "http://www.site.com" and "http://site.com" is known as canonical error. Sometime Canonical URL (best URL version) is also referred as "Preferred Domain".

Canonicalization (Methods to set this problem)

    1. Set your preferred domain (using webmaster tool)
    2. Specify the canonical link for each version of the page
    3. Indicate your canonical (preferred) URLs by including them in a Sitemap
    4. Indicate how you would like Google to handle dynamic parameters. (By using Parameter Handling)
