How do you get difficult keywords to work for your web site?

As you know, there are certain areas where it is very difficult to get a search engine position due to the huge amount of competitive pages, however my question is, how would you get high search engine position for some keywords which are in kinda gray area. Now if you see what I mean, such as people promoting real estate, loans, insurance and even Viagra, Cialis or Levitra??? How do you get on with these?

Janne is right if you have hard competitor in your keyword you should work hard.

SEO is a piece to the puzzle...granted a very large piece. You should get traffic from direct sources as well such as social bookmarking and press releases, and the occasional well written article.
