No they are not. The long tail keywords can be more cost effective than the more popular ones in terms of getting more bang for your buck.
But it depends on what keywords you are using. You don't want to use keywords that have 0 amount of searches. I would recommend using keywords that have a return of 50 searches and above.
What exactly are you looking to do with your keywords? Is this for your meta tags or for a Pay Per Click campaign (eg Google AdWords)?
