Off course web directories play an important role in SEO but the other mehthods are also necessary for SEO link forum posting, blog comments, article submission.

Yahoo - not free (it's actually very costly)
DMOZ - doesn't approve submissions. takes months
Google directory - uses DMOZ data

Apart from that, I agree with you on the importance of directories for SEO process.

Google has changed it rules about the importance of directory submissions. They are no longer recognizing DMOZ.

I totally agree with you....directory submissions are only one of the many ways of getting links.....the other ways are, as mentioned by you article submissions, press releases, blog postings, social bookmarking etc. to add a few to you lists:-)
