Involves creating some backlinks, publishing some articles and so on. Basically is a hidden commercial spot for your site, that is how I see it

SEO is a process of rigorous on-page and off-page optimization techniques. Here’s how:
On-page optimization:
- Include well-researched keywords in appropriate density
- Include meta tags, ALT tags, H1 tags
- Develop a strong internal linking strategy
- Place anchor text properly
- Include a sitemap
- Include fresh, unique content
- Improve page loading speed
- Optimize images and videos properly
(Google has started to push down ad heavy sites, play safe)

Off-page optimization:
- List in niche directories
- Submit your RSS feeds to feed directories
- Submit your website to social bookmarking sites
- Participate in social networking sites and related communities
- Post on online forums and niche related communities
- Write guest posts for related blogs to your niche

There are two parts of SEO: On-page optimization and off-page optimization. In on-page optimization, we emphasize on our web pages. We optimize it by doing bold, italics to our keywords. Writing meta tag and title is an important task of on-page. If images has been used then write alt attribute with it.

Once on-page optimization is complete, We move to off page work. In off-page work, we create back-links of our site by doing link exchange with relevant sites, directory submission, Press Release submission, Classified Ads submission, Forum postings and many other activities.

i agree with the strategy of off page and on page told by c.Rebecca. it is right we have to build good backlinks to the site on which seo work is being done. on page seo is also very important. fresh content and key word having good density is also very important in on page seo.
