how much wait for seo?

hello everyone i am a web developer and working for a new york based web development and ecommerce development company. i am very keen of doing SEO, for this i learnt a number of tactics for link building.
now i have to ask that how much i wait for an output of my efforts. the more i build the links the less is any effect in search engines.
why is anybody with prompt answer???
