On Page Search Engine Optimization has been around the longest, since the begining of search engines. Search engines used simpler less sophisticated technology a few years ago, and the world wide web was alot smaller. At the time "ON Page" SEO Worked years ago, and it was basically an easy comparison. As the World Wide Web grew larger and larger it became more difficult for search engines to differentiate between your site and other sites.

In search engine optimization, on-page optimization refers to factors that have an effect on your Web site or Web page listing in natural search results. These factors are controlled by you or by coding on your page. Examples of on-page optimization include actual HTML code, Meta tags, keyword placement and keyword density. These are very important because in any search engine the keywords are to be entered to the search box instead of any sites url..so on-page plays vital role in bringing more visitors to the site...

On site optimization of does need to be balanced obviously against the read-ability of your content. Saw an example a couple of weeks back, wish I had book marked it, of a blog post that had been keyword stuffed to such a point that it was almost painful to read.

YES... definitely, on-page SEO helps in increasing the ranking of your website. It's equally important as off-page SEO.

To get your website indexed and to improve its rankings in search results, its essential that your website and its web pages URLs should be search engine friendly. This can be done through proper on page optimization.

    On-Page Optimization:

    1) Simplicity: In the page design is one of many overlooked keys to success! Useful, informative content; presented in a structured and compelling manner rewards the client, the visitor and the designer.

    2) Semantics: simply put is the logical structure of a web page. We obtain this structure with headings. Headings have a simple hierarchy; h1 is the most important and the largest, h2 is the second most important and so on thru h6. In normal practice, we only use h1, h2 and h3 as the value of the rest is insignificant at best.

    3) Content: Content is King has never been more true than it is today. All the search companies are striving greatly to present the most relevant content to their users, so pages with relevant, unique content presented in a compelling way have a better chance at a top ranking.

    4) Code: Code plays an important part of any web page. By code, we mean the underlying html of the page itself, often called the source. The three major search engines within their webmaster guidelines stress the importance of correct html. Our policy is to use nothing but valid xhtml 1.0 strict coding with valid css.

    5) Tables: In many ways they are; however, for ease of content entry, there is no format that is as simple or as easy. For these two reasons, we invoke the one exception.

    6) Style-Size: In this context means we use no deprecated or obsolete code, nor do we improperly use tables.Size of the code in a page is extremely important. The smaller the size, the faster a page loads, so we pay particular attention to optimizing the code.

    7) Links: Links within the page should make navigation of a site a breeze. Additionally, outbound links are carefully scrutinized and if they cannot be verified as a good neighborhood they are tagged with the rel="nofollow" anchor attribute so that the page is not penalized.

    8) Keywords: Actually key-phrases are important, they are the terms that thematically identify a page and allow a client to find. From the content, will identify keywords and key-phrases and make recommendations if better choices are available for the advertising.

Yes, on-page SEO helped in gaining ranking for the website, but it is off page SEO who support the on-page work.
    Thanks

SEO is categorized in two parts on page and off page optimization. So by doing only on page optimization your site cannot get pagerank for that you have to work on off page optimization too.
