SEO or Search Engine optimization is by creating and improving a website so that it will rank high in the search engines and help potential customers or clients find the website.

Social Media Optimization (SMO) is an Internet marketing strategy which employs social media, like online communities, RSS feeds, social news buttons, blogging and incorporates third-party community functions like images and video. Social Media Optimization differs from Search Engine Marketing (SEM) because the focus of SMO is to drive traffic from sources other than search engines.

Simple speaking, SEO includes SMO. SMO is an important channel on off-page SEO. Of course, SEO and SMO are all belongs to SEM technologies.

Social Media Optimization (SMO):

A set of methods for generating publicity through social media, online communities and community websites. Methods of SMO include adding RSS feeds, adding a "Digg This" button, blogging and incorporating third party community functionalities like Flickr photo slides and galleries or YouTube videos. Social media optimization is a form of search engine marketing.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO):

The act of altering a web site so that it does well in the organic, crawler-based listings of search engines. In the past, has also been used as a term for any type of search engine marketing activity, though now the term search engine marketing is more commonly used as an umbrella term.

SMO is the small part of SEO. SMO stands for social media optimization ......... and with the help of SMO you can easily get traffic for your site.

So Social Media Optimization helps to gain PR? I know it could bring Traffic but I m not sure if it gives good PR juice to website. I m little new to this so hopefully you guys will help me out.
