Thumbs up What are LINQ query expressions?

A LINQ query, also known as a query expression, consists of a combination of query clauses that identify the data sources for the query. It includes instructions for sorting, filtering, grouping, or joining to apply to the source data. The LINQ query expressions syntax is similar to the SQL syntax. It specifies what information should be retrieved from the data source.

Any query that can be expressed by using query syntax can also be expressed by using method syntax. ... For more information, see Query syntax and method syntax in LINQ. Query expressions can be compiled to expression trees or to delegates, depending on the type that the query is applied to.

A query is a set of instructions that describes what data to retrieve from a given data source (or sources) and what shape and organization the returned data should have. A query is distinct from the results that it produces.
Generally, the source data is organized logically as a sequence of elements of the same kind. For example, a SQL database table contains a sequence of rows. In an XML file, there is a "sequence" of XML elements (although these are organized hierarchically in a tree structure). An in-memory collection contains a sequence of objects.

This condition is generally expressed using lambda expression. LINQ query syntax always ends with a Select or Group clause.

Linq is the Microsoft's first attempt to integrate queries into language. It is really easy to find data from sql objects simply writing a query while its somewhat hectic when we want to do the same thing in a DataTable or Lists. Generally we will have to loop through every elements to find the exact match, if there is some aggregation we need to aggregate the values etc. Linq provides an easy way to write queries that can run with the in memory objects.

Language integrated query (LINQ) is a Microsoft .NET framework programming model, which adds query capabilities to the .NET programming languages. These extensions provide shorter and expressive syntax to manipulate data. A number of features have been added to C# and Visual Basic to support LINQ. It envelops powerful querying on objects, XML files, and databases.
LINQ encapsulates heavy generics. Distinguishing features include extension methods, lambda expressions, an object initializer, query syntax, and anonymous types. These are language extensions to enhance syntactic performance to queries.
