Google recomand to use a structure like this domain. com/directory/keyword.html . You can use .htaccess to rewrite your url. .htaccess must be created in the public_html directory, and write something like this.

    RewriteEngine ON
    RewriteRule directory/(.*).html index.php?modul=directory&keyword=$1 [L]

Use your primary keywords in Url's.
For e.g.Any structure like seotips.com/free_seo_tips.html or seotips.com/free-seo-tips.html is considered as Search Engine friendly.

Dont make the urls cryptic by including numbers and other characters which dont mean any sense. Follow this rule to make the URLs SEO Friendly. If possible, try to include your main keywords within your URL.

    Keep It Clean
The shorter and cleaner your URL is, the better as far as search engines are concerned. Longer query strings (associated with dynamic URLs) are confusing to search engine spiders. Keeping it shorter and cleaner (i.e. www.widget.com/4/basic.html vs. www.widget.com/cgi-bin/gen.pl?id=4&view=basic ) makes it a heck of a lot easier for a search engine to actually figure out what your page is about, and helps them distinguish folder names and find tie-ins to keywords. Not only that, static URLs are easier for users and webmasters both. A dynamic URL that’s full of parameters can be easy for a user to forget, and easy for a webmaster in a hurry to screw up. Not only that, but a dynamic URL that’s full of parameters makes it much easier for a potential hacker to see how a site is structured, then go in and create mischief. There are new methods for rewriting URLs that allow dynamics URLs to be “cloaked” in easier terms, and a static URL won’t be affected by changes in programming language (i.e. Perl vs. Java) from one page to another.

Using htaccess and mod rewrite, you can make SEO friendly yourself....

    1. Creating .htaccess file

Open NotePad (yes, the windows notepad) > File > Save As > Change the “Save as Type” to “All Files” > enter “.htaccess” as the name and press Save. You’ve created a htacces file.

Now paste this codes below into it.

    Options +FollowSymLinks
    RewriteEngine On
The first line Options +FollowSymLinks is required for some server configurations.

    2. Create your own rewrite rule

For example, if you want to change links like mysite.com/index.php?topic=rules to mysite.com/topic/rules/, here’s the rewrite rule.

    Options +FollowSymLinks
    RewriteEngine On
    RewriteRule ^topic/(.*)/$ index.php?topic=$1
Like regular expressions, the dot in (.*) matches any characters.
The asterisk inside the brackets * is a quantifier that match 0 occurence to infinite occurences.
Combining them, (.*) means any number of characters.
The caret ^ means “start with”, meaning the URL starts with the word “topic”.
The dollar sign $ means “end”, meaning the URL ends with a slash.
The $1 is backreference, it carries the content of the first group of brackets.

In other words, when user enters : mysite.com/topic/faqs/ , the page being called and run would be : mysite.com/index.php?topic=faqs

    Example 2
If you want to change URLs like :: mysite.com/index.php?product=productname&price=30 to :: mysite.com/products/productname/30/. Basically its similar to above.

    Options +FollowSymLinks
    RewriteEngine On
    RewriteRule ^products/(.*)/([0-9]+)/$ index.php?product=$1&price=$2
The [0-9] in matches numbers only.

The plus sign is a quantifier that match 1 or more occurences.
Combinign them, ([0-9]+) means 1 or more numbers.
Similarly, $1 will be the first brackets : product name and $2 would be the second brackets : price.

    Example 3
If you want to change URLs like :: mysite.com/article.php?id=45 to :: mysite.com/article-45.html, here’s how:

    Options +FollowSymLinks
    RewriteEngine On
    RewriteRule ^article-([0-9]+)\.html$ article.php?id=$1
The new thing here is the \. (backslash followed by a dot). The backslash here “escapes” the dot, so that the dot means a real dot instead of “anything”.

    Hi,

Use your targeted keyword in relevant URLs and make it short is called SEO friendly URL's.

    For Example:

    (1)http://www.example.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=category&layout= blog&id=36&Itemid=84
    (its not seo friendly)

    (2)http://www.example.com/web-development
    (its seo friendly)

I hope you got difference between both.
