Integrating PHP & J2EE - possible?

So I'm wondering if its possible or not to integrate both PHP and J2EE into the one system. The project that I'm looking at mostly has simple content pages which are easy and fast to create in PHP and one core application that is much more complex in the back-end. Could this core application be modularised to integrate within the PHP framework?

It is clear that ideally one should stick to either PHP or J2EE, but assuming that the system must use both, can PHP and J2EE co-exist peacefully? Assuming that they can, could someone explain at a high level how this works?
