    Rel=canonical is a tag that is defined as a way to tell Google notified that one URL is equivalent to the other URL in terms of search purposes.
    For example, if URL (X) is a duplicate of URL (Y), then the canonical tag refers to the (Y). So the tag for the URL (X) would be linked like this:
    <link rel=”canonical” href= website URL-y.html>
    Please note that Google doesn’t recommend to use rel=canonical in case of Pagination

    When you run a data driven site or have other reasons why a document might be duplicated it’s important to tell search engines which copy is the master copy, or in the jargon, the “canonical” copy.
