buy american express gift cards.... then use those online to buy what you need.
i bought 5 text books from half.com.... things were pretty smooth.... even got one refunded after purchase due to a few day delay....

If the seller accepts paypal, and most do, you can set up your paypal account to draft from your checking.

    sign up for paypal.
Paypal basically lets you "email" money to someone. It will not cost you anything in fees. You can use a debit card or your bank account as a source for the money. If you use paypal in an ebay auction, all you have to do , after you win the book, is click "Pay Now" and it will let you pay them easily with paypal.
Ebay owns PayPal, so they make it very easy to use paypal with auctions, because the seller pays all fees. You pay ZERO fees.

Different sellers have different payment policies. Some accept credit cards, some accept cash. You'll have to check each item's acceptable methods of payment.

I wouldn't recommend using Western Union for this though, there isn't a great deal of accountability if you do that.

Take it up with the seller. Many will take checks or money orders.

Paypal is safe. I used all the time. the reason you need to attention is sometime you got scammer, they said come from paypal to your email...never follow their link....
