I think it should be more than 1000.
If you type the words 'search engine' into a search engine, you'll get a whole massive list of search engines... but only top 5 or so matters.

Not sure but there are more than 1000 search engines. The major search engines which are used mostly are 6 in numbers i.e. Google, Yahoo, Bing, Ask, Aol, Msn
