I don't have much expertise in this field and would love to improve the rank of my site in search engines too.

I believe it may be caused by the fact that the search engine sees your site as less reputable as a higher site or the higher site is closer matched to the terms searched for.

Some sites work on paid results the more you pay the higher you are listed.

I am not really sure exactly how it works but would like to find out.

start getting quality backlinks, most people go for high PR paid links.. for example if your link is placed on a PR8 page you would get a PR of 4-5

if you are loosing hits.. and your rank remains the same.. there may be another better site than yours that people are interested in.. how long have you noticed this.. it may just be a coincidence.. can't give you a straight forward answer man..

Slnet is right. If your ranking has been stable, you might want to look at:

    - whether your META descriptions are stale and competitors are more interesting/enticing to users
    - whether you're missing on long tail searches (try adding more pages to your site to increase your keyword profile)
    - using a backlink tool like Yahoo Site Explorer to see if some of your traffic has been siphoned off from factors other than search engine results such as better positioning in niche sites or at social bookmarking sites

No, I think the problem is little bit more complicated. I think the popularity of targetted keyword has fallen. Another possibility is that the content of your website is lousy and that is why visitors avoiding your website.

The search engines do not stand still fluctuations happen all the time whether it is the sandbox or some other penalty for excessive use of keywords etc.

yeah getting people to stay on your site is a trick in itself, besides getting people to click on your site certain words and design make them say and click even some more, i would just snoop on the competion and see what they have that i dont, never hurts to copy, lol
