Often mistaken for search engines, directories are actually collections of human reviewed web sites that have been arranged into topical categories. Popular directories like Yahoo!, Best of the Web and Skaffe can serve as excellent starting points for navigating the Internet. They can also serve as a valuable resource for small business owners looking for ways to drive more traffic to their web sites.

Directories have proven an important source for links. These links should ideally be optimized for the keywords that we want our site ranked for in the search engines. Usually directories allow the submission of just one page (generally home page), so the keywords have to be relevant to that page. Make sure that you have researched your keywords well and chosen those that are minimally competed for but adequately searched.

I don't think directories play very important role because now a days people are more comfortable in social bookmarking websites, but still directories are going good, and they are however, very tough to maintain.
Making a career with distance learning and education is a good decision.and enroll in online masters classes

Often mistakes are when you try to index the whole web and you don't have much ideas about it

Right, directory is still a source for building backlink but I think the importance might have dropped. Of course, niche relative directories are still my favorites.
