yes alexa and search engine rank has no combination.Alexa rank is purely collect the material only from those users who install alxa toobar in their browser.So keep work on your backlinks with high PR sites and forget about Alexa.

I have been using Quirk Search Status Tool bar which gives me page rank and Alexa Rank both. It is true that Alexa rating seems to be good enough to rate a website traffic among the vast majority of the websites spread over the world wide web.

Alexa is popular to measure the traffic rank of your website, its check your log file of the domain on your server and on that bases it decide the traffic rank. But if you're already getting good traffic from other search engines then you shouldn't loose any sleep over Alexa.
