I've cleaned up more than my fair share of compromised servers (none of which were my clients BEFORE the compromise). Generally speaking, "hackers" aren't interested in harming data on your server. Instead, they want to use your server's resources to attack other servers, steal credit card numbers, steal user accounts, etc.
I actually wrote an article recently on how to prevent your Linux server from getting compromised:
10 Easy Ways to Prevent Your Website from being Hacked
Anyways, most "hacks" happen because at some point, security updates were not installed. This happens with both servers, and desktop computers, which drives home the point to always install security updates!
I am a Linux consultant, who offers Linux consulting services and Linux Server Installation services to clients.
My wife is a Billings, MT photographer.

I think patching your system timely according to the official updates would be a necessity for guarding your sites and computers.
Thanks,
