Post How Does Computer Virus Spread?

For a computer virus to spread through a computer system, or network, it must be activated. This means that the file that contains the virus must be opened, or executed in order for the virus to come to life. After it gets activated, these viruses look for certain programs to infect. The main and the important that you must note is that, all viruses seem to do well is duplicate themselves within the programs they find, and this is the main reason as to how they spread well.

There are a lot of effects that a virus can cause on your computer depends on how it has been programmed to spread. These / this programming can be one of two types: One is the resident and the other is the non-resident. The non-resident viruses are made up of two processes -one finds files on your computer to infect, and the other duplicates the virus.

Resident viruses are made up of only one process. The sole function is to duplicate itself throughout your computer. To perform this action, resident viruses are programmed to load into the computer's memory and the virus itself is activated every time you turn your computer on. This process continues as long as the system is on.

There are four types of viruses that can spread through your system.

    1. Program this type is executed from within specific application programs. The virus spreads to other programs on the computer, or when a copy of an infected program is loaded onto another system.

    2. Boot sector this type enters your system through a floppy disk, and then infects the hard drive. The result is any time a floppy disk is used, it will become infected.

    3. Macro this type is written specifically for macro applications on your computer like Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook. When an infected document is opened within one of these programs, the program itself becomes infected, allowing the virus to spread to any document opened up inside the program.

    4. Email - this type spreads through email attachments. Once an infected attachment is opened, the virus enters your email application. It then duplicates itself by automatically emailing everyone listed in your address book.Prevention/Solution

Nowadays, computer systems are built to protect themselves against viral infection. The floppy disk drives are quickly becoming a thing of the past, so this point of entry has become less popular. Macro viruses rely on security holes within programs like Microsoft Office, so the newer versions of these programs are less vulnerable, but can still be infected. Email viruses are the ones that are most likely to get inside your system.

The best practice is to not open any email attachments from people you don't know. Email attachments from people you do know should be approached with caution if they're worded strangely, or if you've no reason to expect an attachment from a particular person. And lastly, always keep an updated version of anti-virus software on your computer. A good anti-virus program will not only monitor your system, but will screen incoming emails for suspicious content.

Yes they do, open software and if a bug is there, will try to get in to anything opened. accounts don't mean anything. your system is software, and it (depends on what it is) take over your system. or at least disrupt programs.

    Thanks.

    Hello

    • You have effective anti-virus software, so your computer is clean,
    • You send an email to Fred,
    • Now your email address is in Freds address book in his email software,
    • Fred does not have effective anti-virus software, and his computer has a virus,
    • The virus on Freds computer scans his address book for all of the email addresses on it,
    • The virus sends email to every address on Freds address book,
    • The virus emails do not say they are from Fred!, The virus pics another addresse from Fred's address book and puts it in the 'From field' in the outgoing email. The virus may combine the name from one address and the domain from another, creating a 'from address' that does not exist.
    • These emails are received by other computers, which detect the virus (because they have good anti virus software) and reject the email,
    • When the receiving computer rejects the virused email it sends an 'Undeliverable' to the sender e.g. something like 'Subject: /Delivery Notification: Delivery has failed'.
    • But! the 'Undeliverable' note goes to the spoofed from address (not to Fred) e.g. the 'Undeliverable' note could be sent to you.
    • Often there is no trace of Freds real address in the virus email or the 'Undeliverable' note, so you can not tell who's infected computer is sending these emails.

Computer viruses usually spread in one of three ways: from removable media; from downloads off the Internet; and from e-mail attachments.

Although the Internet gets a bad rap as a source of viruses, you're no more likely to contract a virus from the Web than you are from packaged software. Still, scan everything you download, and update your antivirus software regularly.

E-mail is not the virus breeding ground it's made out to be, either. In fact, it's nearly impossible for a virus to be transmitted by plain-text e-mail. Most viruses can only spread via attachments — either rich-text e-mail or attached applications. Using antivirus software, scan attachments from people you know, and never open attachments from people you don't. If you're a Microsoft Outlook user, you can also select security preferences that keep e-mail-borne viruses from exploiting the close relationship between Outlook and the Windows operating system.

    Thanks

The most common way for spreading computer viruses is through email, email attachments, so it is important to know the origin of email attachments. A virus is so small that in most cases the victims have no idea it's hidden under the programme.
