I think you're trying to put out a false one, right? Or do you mean north in general, rather than directly north. You just mean higher north on a map? It is a higher north latitude, but you can't just go straight north from venice and reach vladivostock, so saying "is north of" is still incorrect in the normal way of saying that phrase (where you say iowa is north of missouri for example, meaning in direct geographical proximity to the north).
