How many links should you be building for your site

No limit here, I think for the quality backlinks, the more the better.

Qualtiy backlinks over time from a variety of sources is the key.

It is hard to target the exact number of backlinks you need. The best you can do is type your keyword in google search and look at the top 3 to see how many backlinks they have.

Article submission, directory submission and bookmarking can also increase your backlinks.

The number is an important indicator but not the only one, esp when u at the first stage of the webiste link building, it is highly recommended to gradually build quality links!

I have no limit in building backlinks as long as it is a quality. The more the better. But I'm not doing it for quantity but for quality.

You can build any number of links. I generally tend to stop after I reached the first page of SERPS.

Obviously there is a target but this does not mean that I would try every tricks and even try blackhat SEO techniques for this purpose. I have never compromised with the quality of links because seach engines have become smarter than they were before and therefore we should give importance to the quality of links and not on the quantity of links.
