Creativity is not a problem of mine. Time is. Sponsoring would be the better deal for me.
I only do my webmastering hobby when I am at home and after-work. Although, I have friends who are very interested now in webmastering.

I would say the most effective is providing some sort of template or script that links back to your site....
Because the better it is, the more people that will use it, and therefore the more links that will come back to you.

hmm... sponsoring templates is tricky business
Website A => Cars Modifcation Website. The owner of that site sponsors a very well made, cleanly coded, "web2.0" template.
the template goes into tons of free directories, including blogs. 75% of people remove the copyright instantly upon installing the template. Maybe 10% more in a few weeks when they actually notice it's there (I've done that... lol)
So, now 15% of the people who are using the template have your link. And what sites are they? Well, with such a well made template, you have it used on:
Adult sites
Gambling Sites
Astrology Sites
Pet Sites
Cooking Sites
Gardening Sites
Dental Hygiene Sites
A Huge "Viagra" auto-blog network
etc... etc...
So, what do you think Google does when it see's all these random, spammy sites linking to you?

There are some rules you should to follow when you start building links.
Not get links from same location (i.e. all links from footer etc..)
Try to get links from relevant content/industry.

Link exchange is one better and sophisticated option. But link exchange not with any site, only with site relevant to your site
