I also started with this method and have yet to really see any results. Your comments become lost in other comments and users just don't notice your link, its a waste of time.

It really depends on the quality of the directory or article, I would thing you get more from directory, if its a high quality directory.

commenting on blogs works for building links, but not so much for getting people to click on those links. people are more likely to click on links that are embedded in the text on the page. so...getting someone to blog about your site is helpful.
getting those links are still helpful for building PR, etc.

Link Building by commenting on other blogs is out of date as it is very time consuming. The best way is by submitting to the Authority Directories and Article Submission and exchanging links in the form of Blogrolls.
But commenting on other blogs is good for the beginners as to build links and deriving some traffic. The last thing of importance is commenting is never bad if done with creative writing and evolving in the post and getting or asking something positive.
