Social Networking sites such as Facebook, Myspace, and Social Bookmarking sites, are great ways to add links and promote content....

It's easier for you to use forum posts, blog comments, articles comments. They usually give quite good backlinks.

You can try writing some good articles and submit them to articles directories. Writing on dofollow blogs ( comments ) but make sure you write good comments and not spammy ones, otherwise the owner of the blog won't approve them. You can also submit to web directories, there are thousands of them out there, however I don't know if they are still effective as they used to be.

Don't waste time commenting on blogs and submitting to directories. They take forever to approve links. Add your links in your signature and continue posting on forums at least you know your links are live for the time and hard work you do.

If you are going to do social bookmarking makesure to automate this tedious work with tools like onlywire or socialmarker. They are free and work quickly.

For me, the most efficient channels would be blogging, social bookmarking, article submitting and forum signature links.
