I normally use all the link building methods and I maintain a word document for each keyword. The methods I use are social, articles, link wheeling, reciprocal links, directory submission and etc.

I can't agree that social media sites and networking emails can be considered as way of link building. Social media sites are usually provides “no-follow links” which are not considered as backlinks by Google and for email networking, you don't get any backlinks from it so it can't be considered as link building too.

Doing a link building takes a lot of work, except if you are using a software for that, but for me I am doing it manually, although its a time consuming but for me manual is more effective that automated. I do organized my work, putting it into spreadsheet, logins, information, etc. Profile backlinks, forum posting, blog commenting and RSS feeds submissions are one of the most common linkbuilding I know that its effective.
