Photoshop is good. You can try Corel Draw.

I am no expert but would say photoshop cs3 there does not seem to be much you cannot accomplish with it a little expensive yes but overall a good purchase.

I think most of the people use photoshop. Some also use Gimp.

Gimp is similar to photoshop only difference its FREE.

GIMP (the free version of photoshop) + A good artist = great logo
(of course if you're not a good artist, then your logo won't be as good, but check out some tutorials:

it doesnt matter what software you use, its the creativity of the artist that matters,
