Default Google begins selling expanded online storage

Web search and Internet services company Google Inc. on Friday began selling expanded online storage, aimed at users with large picture, music or video file collections.

Google said the storage can be used across several Google products, including photo site Picasa and the e-mail service Gmail. The storage will soon also work with Google Docs & Spreadsheets, which are the company's word processing and spreadsheet applications.

The annual prices established were $20 for 6 gigabytes of online storage, $75 for 25 GB, $250 for 100 GB and $500 for 250 GB.

Gmail users currently get nearly 3 GB of free storage while Picasa users get 1 GB. The expanded storage would kick in when a user runs out of free storage in a particular service.

I'm not sure I understand what they are offering. I take it that this is not hosting in the sense that you would not be able to link to the uploaded images and embed them in your site - just storage. But why would you pay so much? An external backup drive will get you that many gigs for a lot less.

maybe because you want the convenience of accessing your files from all over the world even if you forgot to take the files on a drive..

Do you have to opt into the cost of the expanded storage if your account goes over the current free limit or is it automatic as I don't believe I will reach 3 GB of email but don't want to have to pay for the service if I do, I would just delete some emails.

its a great service for travellers and people who like to store files and get them wherever they want instead of carrying an extra drive along. In my case i use maybe 10% of the current free storage

Or you can use outlook.. and archive all your files back to your system... and hey there ya go.. you are going to take your system.. where ever you travel right... I mean... if you are getting so much mails... that your gmail is full.. then the chances are most likely.. you have a lap top.. just what I would do.. (I am actually doing it)..

Gmail is almost 4 GB of storage and Hotmail has responded in the last few days updating their layout and storage to 5 Gb free. Can only be good for us..
