I think it is still a mystery. It is a new engine from Google and was said to would have more accurate and speedy indexes for our sites.
thanks,
It appears that Caffeine is rolling out at present. There are some strange things happening in the search listings right now. The most concerning IMHO is the appearance of URL only results, maybe 2 per search in short query strings. These seem to be from established sites and are not just redundant background pages as has been reported in some of the 'expert' seo forums. I have just seen a respected fitness (PR4) company get a number 4, URL only, position for its home page on a search for a quite legit industry specific keyphrase. This, theorically, could be disasterous for them ... and if it has an effect on their link juice, it could cast disaster to tons of other sites who have built their strength on the back of links from sites like these.
Fingers crossed that it sorts itself out.

Google Caffeine is an "under the hood" development in the Google search engine algorithm that will augment (slightly) how sites rank on Google's search engine results pages.
One of the major outcome of the Caffeine update is faster search results, one can experience a much time difference between the present Google search algorithm and upcoming Caffeine algorithm.
Well, it shows the updates and the new information of the Google's algorithm simply...

this new architecture appears to include crawling, indexing, and ranking changes. For the first time, Google isn’t simply incorporating these changes into their existing infrastructure or replacing it. Instead, they’re providing a developer preview and are asking webmasters and power searchers to try it out and give them feedback. Unlike Google’s now-defunct SearchMash, which was intended for search experiments that wouldn’t necessarily be incorporated into Google’s main web search, the caffeine index seems to be an entirely new search infrastructure that will repace what exists now.
