Ping is used to know that the content has been updated.

It is used testing the speed of server..

In simple terms, Pinging is like raising the red flag on the mailbox to tell the mailman you have new mail to be sent. In this case, you are telling the search engines and other weblog tracking sites that your site has been updated.
