A business (also called a firm or an enterprise) is a legally recognized [COLOR=windowtext]organization[/COLOR] designed to provide [COLOR=windowtext]goods[/COLOR] and/or [COLOR=windowtext]services[/COLOR] to [COLOR=windowtext]consumers[/COLOR]. Businesses are predominant in [COLOR=windowtext]capitalist[/COLOR] economies, most being privately owned and formed to earn [COLOR=windowtext]profit[/COLOR] that will increase the [COLOR=windowtext]wealth[/COLOR] of its owners and grow the business itself. The owners and operators of a business have as one of their main objectives the receipt or generation of a [COLOR=windowtext]financial return[/COLOR] in exchange for [COLOR=windowtext]work[/COLOR] and acceptance of [COLOR=windowtext]risk[/COLOR]. Notable exceptions include [COLOR=windowtext]cooperative[/COLOR] businesses and [COLOR=windowtext]state-owned enterprises[/COLOR]. [COLOR=windowtext]Socialist[/COLOR] systems involve either government agencies, public, or worker ownership of most sizable businesses.
The [COLOR=windowtext]etymology[/COLOR] of "business" relates to the state of being busy either as an individual or society as a whole, doing commercially [COLOR=windowtext]viable[/COLOR] and profitable work. The term "business" has at least three usages, depending on the scope — the singular usage (above) to mean a particular [COLOR=windowtext]company[/COLOR] or [COLOR=windowtext]corporation[/COLOR], the generalized usage to refer to a particular [COLOR=windowtext]market sector[/COLOR], such as "the music business" and compound forms such as [COLOR=windowtext]agribusiness[/COLOR], or the broadest meaning to include all activity by the community of suppliers of goods and services. However, the exact definition of business, like much else in the [COLOR=windowtext]philosophy of business[/COLOR], is a matter of debate.
[COLOR=windowtext]Business Studies[/COLOR], the study of the [COLOR=windowtext]management[/COLOR] of individuals to maintain collective [COLOR=windowtext]productivity[/COLOR] in order to accomplish particular creative and [COLOR=windowtext]productive[/COLOR] goals (usually to generate profit), is taught as an [COLOR=windowtext]academic[/COLOR] subject in many schools.
