is a great amount of reserve cash needed once you conduct an online business?

Depends on the business and how much stock you intend to hold. If cash is an issue there are some businesses out there that offer a drop ship service, where your profit will be lower but you wont have to hold stock, hence needing less of a cash reserve.

Depends on whether the business delivers softgoods or ships physical products. I have started three on-line businesses.

One is product I stock. $1000 to start up, online for 6 months
Second is product I stock. $2000 to start up, online for 9 years
Third is downloadable software. $200 to start up.
