Businesses can gain a good or bad reputation, it all depends on their level of capitalism (how much the business is interested in making money, at all costs), and how they conduct themselves to make money brings up ethical behavior. Most people say that businesses should be held responsible for their own ethics as well as ones tied in relationship with other businesses. As a result, major big companies have been fined millions for breaking ethical business laws, money is usually the main factor to whether a company has done wrong.

I think ethics is needed everywhere not only in business. I would prefer working with reliable and honest people rather than people without any principles.

Ethics are a set of moral principles which are recognized in respect to a particular class of human actions or a particular group, for instance the medical ethics, legal ethics, teaching ethics that brings together people of the same profession.

These principles deal with values relating to human conduct with respect to concepts such as being good or bad, noble or ignoble, right or wrong etc. These values guide members of a group to act in a manner that is consistent with the values and standards as established. Business ethics are those virtues that business people apply when making business decisions. They are the standards expected within the business world, even if they are not written down and which business people ought to adopt. For instance business people are expected to afflict least suffering to their customers, being fair in their dealings and nurturing an enduring virtuous corporate character in totality.

Business ethics are important because they keep business people to operate within a moral and legal pedestal which not only leaves them satisfied internally but also increases sales because most people like dealing or doing business with honest businessmen. Also if the public or your potential customers perceive you to be engaging in improper business deals, they will shun you.

Good business ethics should be embraced by all businessmen because engaging in unethical practices, which may include breaking the law, may lead to heavy fines or lack of trust by members of the public. Some of the business ethics include the following:

    1. Being trustful by recognizing that customer is the king. Customers want to do business with companies they trust and which they perceive to be showing them respect. When a business entity is trusted, it creates a loyal clientele.

    2. Business people should be ready to meet the obligations of their customers and business partners regardless of anything else. Business people should offer their end of the bargain at all cost because this is the only way to cement customer and business partner's loyalty.

    3. Engaging in fair trading practices like guaranteeing a safe workplace for your employees, fair pricing for your products, that will at least cover the cost of production and treating you customers well among others will guarantee a high business turnover.

    4. Every businessman wakes up every day with the intent to make profit. When a business operates within ethical realms, there will always be clear indications for growth. Equally, a business needs to make profit so as to meet its ethical obligations to the company, its employees, the authorities and customers.

    5. In essence, being ethical as a business person builds the image of reliability and establishes reputation with your customers, the two things that are very important to a business.

Most business people do not take a keen interest in implementing business ethics. Most of them think that making profit is the most important thing but as they realize later, no matter how hard they try, they do not achieve their objectives.

For a business to achieve long-term profits, customer relationship is of utmost importance. To gain a long-term relationship with customers and achieve customer return for the business, the business needs to be based on ethics. The trustworthiness of a business, its customer service, its customer care, its way of dealing with customers and its urge to retain their old customers, is a part of the business ethics. Business ethics leave a long-lasting impression on the customers and the impression on their minds builds trust, fetching a business more customers while retaining the older ones.

Most of us are concerned about making money for our business and we cater to the legalities in business. But we seldom bother to base our business on ethics. At times, ethical duties of businessmen and project managers could be more abiding than even the business laws. Ethics is a far-reaching concept and goes beyond the idea of making money legally. Ethical values are way ahead of earning money. Ethics is more about earning long-lasting relationships in business.

Many people wonder if business ethics is just a buzzword that has been tossed around lately, due to some of the aggressive tactics we have seen them as we enter the 21st century. I assure you, it is here to stay. What needs to be done is for more people to brush up on their ethics, as they relate to business, to make sure they always operate with a high standard of moral conduct

People who seek motivation behind being ethical should understand that they are ethical by definition. Ethics is an integral part of running a business and hence ethical values accompany business by default. Without following certain ideals in business, one cannot become successful. Success that is attained without a foundation of strong ethics is bound to be short-lived. A business cannot continue to prosper without an ethical base. A few successes can be coincidences or flukes but persistent success can only be a result of a strong foundation of ethics.

The benefits given by the business organization should not be used in an unfair manner. The use of company resources for personal benefits and taking an undue advantage of business resources is completely unethical. Using the wealth of the business for personal reasons is not ethical. Using company funds for personal reasons is unethical. A thoughtful and a careful utilization of company resources is a part of business ethics. A vigilant and a prudent use of resources is an essential component of ethics in business.

If an organization's corporate culture is characterized by ethical behaviors, then the decisions that are made by the company's leaders and workers are likely to be ones that are socially responsible rather than motivated solely by a profit-seeking motive. Socially responsible business decisions are ones that are made from a stakeholder perspective, focusing on coming up with problems that take into account the needs of everyone who has the potential to be impacted by the company's actions. By focusing on the impact an action will have on all stakeholders rather than solely on the bottom line, companies can avoid making decisions that are on the wrong side of the line between right and wrong.
