Default Why Is Employee Motivation Important?

    Hi

Why is employee motivation important? Employee motivation can be the difference between success and failure for your business. Encouraging employees to behave as if they are owners of the company has proven to be a successful strategy for business growth. At the other end of the spectrum, canned employee motivation programs often lead to a lack of motivation because they lack the personal touch that shows an individual employee that you care.

It doesn't matter what product or service your company provides. If your employees are not motivated to meet your needs, they won't.

    More than a Paycheck
Many are of the mindset that the almighty paycheck should be all the motivation employees need. Others believe it will bankrupt the company to invest in employee motivation strategies, failing to see that they can't afford not to. Some cynical managers even believe it isn't possible to motivate employees to grow a business at all. Others recall past employee motivation strategies that failed. Many companies have performance pay structures that reward the employee who shines with the same pay as the employee who merely warms a seat.

Failure to maintain a culture of employee motivation will not lead a company toward achieving its goals, but will instead foster mediocrity and apathy among the team. Companies that are most successful at keeping their employees motivated to exceed expectations have gone beyond implementing performance standards and rewards. They have created a culture of employee motivation that feeds into every level of the organization and is a foundation for every process.

    Case Studies
The power of employee motivation was demonstrated by Springfield Remanufacturing Corp. (SRC), according to Jack Stack's book, The Great Game of Business.

During a recession in 1991, net profits actually increased at SRC. Stack, SRC's CEO at the time, saw firsthand the results of a team of motivated employees when the company achieved a production goal beyond any previously imagined. Very solid profits were earned for the company and the employees were not forced to do anything different. They solved several business issues themselves and achieved the goal because they wanted to do it. He coined the phrase, "You gotta wanna." He motivated his team, which had historically produced 2 or 3 tractors each day, to push 800 tractors out the door in only 20 work days.

When International Harvester, now Navistar International Corp., was faced with the looming likelihood that the company would be forced to shut down, the executive team presented the facts to the frontline workers. The company opened its books and taught the employees what issues were causing and creating the financial dilemmas. Employees who had no formal training in accounting or business management were empowered to change the fate of the company. To save their jobs, the employees had to change the way the company did business. They succeeded and became international cheerleaders for open-book management.

These examples demonstrate that when employees clearly understand the specific goals and expectations of the company and realize what their rewards will be, they are motivated to succeed.

    What Works
Numerous human resource professionals have researched employee motivation over the years. The results consistently demonstrate that employee motivation, and ultimately job satisfaction, is not usually driven by pay. Employees are motivated or satisfied by other factors, such as work environment, advancement opportunities, feeling as though they are part of a greater good, recognition for a job well done and having managers who value their contributions to the company. Companies that consciously enact strategies to create a culture of employee motivation are the companies that attract and retain the best talent and surpass their corporate goals.

    Thanks

It is often assumed that all people are motivated by the same things. Actually we are motivated by a whole range of factors. Include questions to elicit what really motivates employees, including learning about their values. Are they motivated by financial rewards, status, praise and acknowledgment, competition, job security, public recognition, fear, perfectionism, results...

    Hi

Every company has a personality -- a culture. If new hires fit into that culture, they'll adapt to what's required and learn to do the job. If they don't fit into that culture, they'll never learn and will be a continual problem to you and your employees. Under expanding employee-rights law, you have like 90 days to make that determination. If they're not fitting in -- or even if you have reservations about their fitting in -- let them go! Once they've passed that initial trial period, you have an obligation -- moral if not legal -- to help that person become the best employee that he or she can be.

    Hi

high performance levels and translate it into profit. Engaged and motivated employees are more likely to stay with the company longer, be a champion of the company and offer increased contribution to the bottom line. So employee motivation and engagement is critical to any business that seeks to retain valued employees and increase its level of performance. We already know that wages and benefits are important to employees, but direct compensation is only a part of the package required to keep the highly skilled, motivated and experienced workforce that a business needs to succeed. Of the many ways to engage staff; training, personal development, security, being appreciated, going on team building events, leadership development, conferences and incentives are commonly quoted by employees as ingredients to emloyee motivation.

The answer to "Why is employee motivation important?" is because in today's down economy, it's more important than ever to have a motivated workforce.
    employee motivators

That's because a motivated employee is a productive employee. And a productive employee is a more profitable employee. See how that works? When people aren't motivated, they become less productive, less creative, less of an asset to your company. Now more than ever, we need motivated employees!

Choose to Be Happy at Work

Happiness is largely a choice. I can hear many of you arguing with me, but it's true. You can choose to be happy at work. Sound simple? Yes. But, simplicity is often profoundly difficult to put into action. I wish all of you had the best employer in the world, but, face it, you may not. So, think positively about your work. Dwell on the aspects of your work you like. Avoid negative people and gossip. Find coworkers you like and enjoy and spend your time with them. Your choices at work largely define your experience. You can choose to be happy at work.

    Thanks

    Hi

    1. Don’t forget the fun. Once in a while you have put work aside and do something nice for the people who work for you. Treat the office to a pizza lunch or take everyone to the movies. Reward employees with an unexpected day off or by closing the office early on a random Friday afternoon.
    2. Acknowledge contributions. You can make a huge difference in employee morale simply by taking the time to recognize each employee’s contributions and accomplishments, large or small. Be generous with praise.
    3. Provide incentives. Offer people incentives to perform well, either with something small like a gift certificate or something more substantial such as a performance-based bonus or salary increase. Give out “Employee of the Month” awards. Such tokens of appreciation will go far in motivating employees.
    4. Honor your promises. Getting people to give their all requires following through on promises. If you tell an employee that he or she will be considered for a bonus if numbers improve or productivity increases, you’d better put your money where your mouth is. Failure to follow through on promises will result in a loss of trust -- not only that person’s trust, but the trust of every employee that hears the story.
    5. Provide career coaching. Help employees reach the next level professionally by providing on-site coaching. Bring in professionals to provide one-on-one counseling, which can help people learn how to overcome personal or professional obstacles on their career paths.

    Thanks

Here are some ways you can get your employees motivated, enthused, and ready to go conquer the world:

    First, motivate yourself.
Have you ever worked for a sourpuss? I know I have...on more than one occasion, as a matter of fact. Talk about a de-motivator! It's hard to feel good about your job if your boss is stressed out, disinterested, and/or unmotivated.
However, one of the truest statements ever made is that enthusiasm is contagious. (Oh, by the way, the opposite is true as well.) If your employees see that you're enthusiastic about your job, they are more likely to be enthusiastic about theirs.
Then, one of the first steps to learning why is employee motivation important, is to find out what motivates you and then make sure you're doing it on a regular basis. Are you motivated by money? Extra time off? Praise and recognition? Just because you're the boss doesn't mean you shouldn't be rewarded! Chances are good that many of the things that motivate you will answer the question of why is employee motivation important. Which leads us to the next subject.

    Understand what motivates your employees.
Again remember that main answer to why is employee motivation important is so you can stay in business. Therefore, before you can understand why is employee motivation important you must understand what motivates them individually.

Different people are motivated by different things: money, success, recognition, popularity, status, career development, health, balance, learning. Use this list as a starting point to develop your own "motivational" list, and ask each of your employees to check the things that are important to them. Once they do this, sit down with each employee to discuss her motivational factors and design a reward program that is specific to her individual psyche.

Make your employees feel rewarded, recognized, and appreciated.

Because let's face it, it makes a heck of a lot more sense to retain employees than hiring new ones all the time. One of the best ways I know to retain an employee is to make her feel appreciated. Never underestimate the value of simply saying "thank you." And if you've done a good job understanding why is employee motivation important, while determining her motivators (as per the above point), then your battle is half won already. Just be sure to be consistent and fair with your rewards, recognition and praise, or it will have a de-motivating effect on your staff.

    Challenge your employees to greatness.
The best way to build a great company is to motivate your employees to be great themselves. Encourage your employees to continue growing and developing their skills and talents so they can be and do everything they want to. Inspire them to achieve their goals. Let them know that opportunities are limitless!

    Create a positive environment.

Have you ever walked into an office where you could just feel the bad vibes floating all over the place? The receptionist is frowning, the owner is scowling...heck, even the janitor looks mad!

If you want to motivate your workforce, you need to promote an atmosphere that exudes positive energy. Make sure all you employees know they are important, valued members of a team. Always discourage gossip among your employees, and never engage in it yourself. Keep your office doors open and keep yourself approachable, and encourage all your managers to do the same. The more positive your environment, the more motivated and productive your staff will be. Are you understanding the answers to "why is employee motivation important" yet?
