Default Some Tips for employee motivation

Almost all employees want to do interesting work, secure a good salary and earn recognition for their contributions. But motivating employees takes more than money and an occasional “thank-you.” It requires a strategy tailored to each worker’s needs.

    1. Ask what they want out of work. Just knowing that an HR manager or boss is interested in a worker's goals will make many employees feel better about their jobs. It can be difficult to get a quick and accurate answer to this question, however. Some workers may say that they want to work on a prestigious project, for example, only to discover once they have been assigned to the project that it isn’t what they expected.

It may help to ask a more specific question. Have workers describe a previous project that they felt good about, then see what aspects of that can be repeated, suggested Michael Beasley, a career-development and executive coach who owns Career-Crossings in Portola Valley, Calif.

    2. Consider each employee’s age and life stage. There are exceptions to every generalization, of course, but workers nearing the end of their careers are often less focused on the next promotion than those who are just starting to climb the corporate ladder. Younger workers may also be less accustomed than older ones to waiting patiently in a job they don’t find interesting.

    3. Match motivators to the company or department culture. Again, there are exceptions, but engineers are likely to be motivated by working on cutting-edge projects. On the other hand, sales professionals tend to use money as a way to measure how well they’re doing.

    4. Pinpoint each employee’s personality. Some people love public praise; others are mortified by it and would much prefer a sincere, in-person “thank-you.” Make sure you take this into account if you are planning a ceremony to give awards or other recognition.

Employee motivation techniques vary from expert to expert. However, they all have the same goal, getting employees to want to do their job better and more efficiently. So how can a business owner or manager get their employees motivated?

Through effective employee motivation techniques a company can get much better performance out of their employees. One technique to motivate employees that works really well is the employee of the month. This highlights a single individual who has shown outstanding drive, performance and effort for the given month. This should be awarded by management and not by peer review. You do not want it to become a popularity contest. Most companies will post the person's picture in a prominent area, and they also get a few perks for that month -- a parking spot up close to the entrance with a sign that says reserved for employee of the month is often given. Sometimes a small gift is given like a pen or coffee mug that says employee of the month. It is usually good to have an awards ceremony or to give out this award at management meeting. It does not cost the company a lot of money to implement this, but the result of this technique is huge. First of all it gives the employee recognition and lots of it. We all like to be told when we have done a good job. This is especially true when we know we have put a lot of time and effort into something. This simple technique will definitely motivate your employees.

Other effective employee motivation techniques include competitions between teams in order to get projects completed faster, awards for perfect attendance, and awards for jobs well done. Some companies will let customers rate their customer service representatives. At the end of a specific time frame an award is given to the person who has provided the most outstanding customer service.

In order for employee motivation techniques it is imperative that they are based solely on job performance. There cannot be awards based on popularity or need. Those types of awards will undermine employee motivation and cause bad or hurt feelings. So when all is said and done, be sure to reward those who have shown focus and dedication beyond what was expected!

Employee Motivation is important to the efficiency and success of a business.

Incentives are always a good motivator and doesn't necessarily have to be monetary. Recognition of good work and feeling appreciated is so important.

Invest in team building so people better work together. Give people the opportunity to progress up the career ladder

I once worked as a Manager in the cable television industry. At the time I had an unlimited supply of electronics, clothing, cash bonuses, etc. to use as sales and goodwill incentives. Giving away goodies via contests, parties, and drawings were a weekly, if not daily, occurrence. After one rather expensive incentive campaign, I received "complaints" about the taxes on a cash bonus and the color of a free $200 Showtime leather varsity jacket. These incentives had become entitlements. The trinkets we used to motivate and energize did have a short-term effect on sales and attitude. As a result, the work fell on management to constantly devise bigger and better incentives to "motivate" the staff. In the words of Janet Jackson - "what have you done for me lately"?

Those years taught me a lesson about motivating employees. Most of us would rather have inspired, self-directed teams that take pride in their work - without heavy-handed motivation tricks. Here are five tips for truly motivating employees:

    1. Focus on non-contingent interaction.
Interacting with people on a personal level. As a leader, your relationship with your team does not focus solely on work. Madeleine Hunter said, "people don't care how much you know, until they know how much you care". You don't have to dole out hugs and kisses every morning, but you can't be like a Vice-President I once worked under. He literally never left his office or spoke with the staff during the course of the day. When he did attempt to lead, it had minimal effect since we did not have a relationship.

    Thanks

You should encourage them. You always have help when they need. You would not think it is a popular competition. Other effective ways to motivate employees, including competition between teams to get projects done faster. You should give them respect for good and best price.

I still think that good salary is the main motive to work and to run the good business. If a worker is satisfied with the salary, she or he is going to be loyal and hard-working.
