Very good question. I think you will get different answers from different people, I think most domainers will say anything under 5, but I think the reality is as long as its rememberable and relevant to your niche I don't really think it matters. There are plenty of high PR sites that have extremely loooooooong domain names, that obviously had no problem ranking.

For me personally I try to stay around 5, but it really depends on the domain. I think the best answer is "As Short As Possible!"

Shorter domain names are easier to type, easier to remember and far less susceptible to mistakes.

I think that a domain name must be maximal 6 characters long, better 3 or 4.

Generally a short domain name is a great thing If you can't find a suitable short domain than there is nothing wrong with longer domain names either, but some of the basic rules apply

    • Must be easy to remember
    • Must be easy to relay to someone else
    • Must be easy to spell

For best ranking results, avoid uncommon top-level domains (TLDs). Like hyphens, TLDs such as .info, .cc, .ws, and .name are spam indicators. Length.

For best positioning outcomes, maintain a strategic distance from unprecedented top-level areas (TLDs). Like hyphens, TLDs, for example, .information, .cc, .ws, and .name are spam markers. Length.
Keep away from area names longer than 15 characters.

under 20 characters (including the extension) should be okay.
Don't forget to always make sure anything you come up with should be memorable and easy to recall
