DNS Propagation is the time it takes for changes you make to your DNS to begin to take effect. Due to various levels of caching, changes you make to your DNS will most likely not take immediate effect. When a nameserver change is made on a domain it can take 4 to 24 hours for the DNS changes to propagate to all networks around the world. Your Internet Service Provider may also have caching periods that can delay the change from reflecting in your browser.

DNS Means Domain Name System.A DNS server translates a computer or domain name to the associated IP address. It provides a way to map friendly host names, or URLs, to IP addresses. A DNS server runs special-purpose networking software, features a public IP address.

One way I sometimes describe it is that it is the time it takes the whole internet to know of any changes of where a website is hosted...an analogy would be the time it takes for a new phone number to be published in a whitepages directory.

DNS propagation is the term commonly used to describe what happens when DNS changes are made to a DNS zone. DNS entries are cached by many applications including browsers and other DNS servers. A cached DNS entry will be saved locally and reused for every request until the cached entry expires. The length of time that a record is cached for is determined by the TTL (Time To Live) of each record. This means that when a website administrator makes a change to a website's DNS entries (for example, changing the IP address of an A record), users of the website will continue using the old IP address from the old record until all of the cached entries between them and the authoritative name servers for the domain expires and are refreshed.

When DNS changes are made, they are not instantaneously visible across the Internet at large.
As DNS is a heavily cached, distributed system with no central location where all DNS information is stored, any DNS change takes time to reach other parts of the system. This period of time is often referred to as DNS propagation.

When you update the nameservers for a domain, it may take up to 24-48 hours for the change to take effect. This period is called DNS propagation. In other words, it is a period of time ISP (Internet service provider) nodes across the world take to update their caches with the new DNS information of your domain.

'DNS propagation' is used to describe the time frame after making any changes to your domain name. In the other way, we can say when you update the nameservers for a domain, it may take up to 24-48 hours for the change to take effect. This period is called DNS propagation
