I saw many times the situation when several domains are used for the same website. A common sense can be easily understood when for example different domains are used to demonstrate website pages are presented in several languages! But personally I don’t understand for which purposes the same website is made available under different domains in other cases? What advantages can be taken from displaying a website under different domains?

If you know what does it mean 3 way link exchange, you should understand for what use one more domain.

There is actually a big disadvantages to this. Each domain name would be pointed to identical content, which might trigger a duplicate content penalty in Google. I would avoid doing this.

Well one reason which I though is ... they do not want that competitor should take advantage of similar kind of domain and hence they bought all likely domain names and than divert it to main page.

In this way they can play the game safely ...

Some people buy multiple domain names to cover the searches being done and it is really useful. Suppose you are selling something and doing really well and a competitor obtains a domain name that is slightly different then yours, now when you do search engine optimisation - some of your intended visitors might actually visit the wrong site by just making a spelling mistake etc and you lose your revenue. Any thoughts ???

Ive been thinking of that too. Because there are really a lot of domain names that are not purchased that might be related to our site and has good keyword rankings

I was tempted to do this, but like Demtron said, I might be penalized by Google

I won't do that. Waste of money and domain names.

It is a use of misspelling that u can make use of through a redirect, but not through the buying of seveal domains.

Sevaral domains lead to the same webiste can only hurt IMO.

Correct me if I am wrong! I will appreciate that!
