I think there is a number of way you can get free domain name if yo are vigilant in this forum and other forums as well, some domain name registration used to do buy one and get one free offer, buy a hosting package and get a free domain name and lot more. You need to check web hosting and domain name forum for such offer, from time to time as you may not know we they will come around.

Free domain registrars are not good for any serious website. If you can than get an .info for less than 1$ (GoDaddy.com). I've been using co.cc and co.nr and I had bad experience with them.

I have used .co.cc for free domains and also uses .co.nr as it is very popular choice for free domains.
